WHERE DO I START?

So you've picked up your new gundog puppy and you're not sure where to start?

Training a gundog is not easy, but don't let that put you off training for, and competing in Retrieving Trials. Whether you plan on using your dog in the field or just competing in competitions, the time you spend with your new companion, training and competing, will be a very rewarding experience.

It's probably wise to mention that not all successful gundogs have a swag of trophies under their belt. The sheer companionship and comradery of your gundog is extremely valuable. And in the field or on the lounge chair at home, you and your dog will both be fulfilled knowing that he has the opportunity to use his natural instincts and do what gundogs do best....retrieve!

Oh, and just a word from the wise....don't expect to get it right first time. Both you and your dog will make mistakes in training and competing. Learn from them, don't be too hard on yourself or your dog, enjoy the experience...life is too short.

Below are a few articles that you might find helpful when starting out.

Our club also holds 'Training Days' and 'Training Evenings' so that new people and their dogs can come along and have a go without the pressures of entering a competiton. Keep and eye out in our events page for future dates for training days and nights.

Most importantly, enjoy retrieving with your dog.
